About the band

In recent years, saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux has become a key figure on the Belgan jazz and improvised music scene (Macondo Trio, Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters, Pentadox, Hélène Duret Synestet).
For his new trio, Sylvain Debaisieux has surrounded himself with two Portuguese musicians who recently moved to Belgium and are very active on the avant-garde jazz scene : double bassist Zé Almeida (Adèle Viret, Samuel Ber, Magik Malik) and drummer Diogo Alexandre (Aleph Quintet, Casimir Liberski). The work on timbre and sound research, as well as the strong personalities of the three musicians, give this trio a truly unique sound.
The trio focuses on and highlights three aspects of music that connect them: : the use of jazz standards in an open and contemporary context, spontaneous improvisation and original compositions by Sylvain Debaisieux.
These compositions are inspired by his collaborations and work with groups such as Pentadox, Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters, In A Round Trio, and draw on his influences in the music of Tim Berne, Benoît Delbecq, Magik Malik, Bo Van Der Werf, Guillaume Orti, Stéphane Payen, with a constant search for freedom in complex rhythmic forms mixed with poetic, funambule-like colors. It is music that aims to be both suspended on a tightrope and deeply rooted in the earth, like a tree whose roots sink deep beneath the surface and whose crown rises high into the sky; hence the name of the project, “Kodama,” which in Japanese culture refers to a being that represents the spirit of the tree or forest.
The group has been selected for a residency at Werkplaats Walter (Brussels) for the Belgian Jazz Week in february 2026.
