Sylvain Debaisieux (°1993, Brussels) is a saxophonist and improviser constantly looking for new ways of expression on his instrument.
Sound, flow, energy and rhythm are central aspects in his playing that he develops and experiments on stage with diverse Belgium-based bands such as Pentadox, Stéphane Galland & (The Mystery of) KEM, and Lynn Cassiers’ Imaginary Band.
After studying at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with John Ruocco and Jeroen Van Herzeele, and graduating with great distinction, Sylvain Debaisieux was granted a fellowship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F) which allowed him to study for a year at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. While there, he took classes and private lessons with renowned musicians such as Ellery Eskelin, Mark Shim, Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, and Ingrid Laubrock.
In 2012, he represented Belgium in the “European Saxophone Ensemble” led by French saxophonist Guillaume Orti, which toured in more than ten European countries.
From 2014, he took part in studio recordings such as “Heptatomic” with Eve Beuvens (2015, Igloo), Lynn Cassiers’ Imaginary Band (2018, Clean Feed), Stéphane Galland & The Mystery of KEM (2018, Outnote Records), Pentadox – “Between” (2018, Auto-prod.), and played regularly in the most prestigious venues in Belgium: Bozar, Flagey, Handelsbeurs, Nona, Concertgebouw Brugge, etc.
In 2016 he was a Horlait-Dapsens Foundation laureate, and 2018 won the “Jong Jazz Talent” award at Gent Jazz festival with the group Pentadox.
